Cepheid Mass-loss and the Pulsation – Evolutionary Mass Discrepancy
نویسنده
چکیده
I investigate the discrepancy between the evolution and pulsation masses for Cepheid variables. A number of recent works have proposed that non-canonical mass-loss can account for the mass discrepancy. This mass-loss would be such that a 5M⊙ star loses approximately 20% of its mass by arriving at the Cepheid instability strip; a 14M⊙ star, none. Such findings would pose a serious challenge to our understanding of mass-loss. I revisit these results in light of the Padova stellar evolutionary models and find evolutionary masses are (17 ± 5)% greater than pulsation masses for Cepheids between 5 < M/M⊙ < 14. I find that mild internal mixing in the main-sequence progenitor of the Cepheid are able to account for this mass discrepancy. Subject headings: Cepheids:pulsation stellar:evolution

Bump Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds Metallicities, the Distances to the Lmc and Smc, and the Pulsation-evolution Mass Discrepancy
We utilize nonlinear pulsation models to reproduce the observed light and color curves for two samples of bump Cepheid variables, 19 from the Large Mag-ellanic Cloud and 9 from the Small Magellanic Cloud. This analysis determines the fundamental parameters mass, luminosity, effective temperature, metallicity, distance and reddening for the sample of stars. The use of light curve shape alone to ...

متن کاملThe Connection Between Pulsation, Mass Loss and Circumstellar Shells in Classical Cepheids
Recent observations of Cepheids using infrared interferometry and Spitzer photometry have detected the presence of circumstellar envelopes (CSE) of dust and it has been hypothesized that the CSE’s are due to dust forming in a Cepheid wind. Here we use a modified Castor, Abbott & Klein formalism to produce a Cepheid wind, and this is used to estimate the contribution of mass loss to the Cepheid ...
متن کاملThe Luminosity Scale of Cepheid Variable Stars: a Revision
The period-luminosity-color relation for classical Cepheids is discussed in terms of a recent redeterminations of the distance moduli of open clusters with Cepheid members. The distance moduli of eight clusters with well established Cepheid members were determined from Stromgren four-color and Hp photometry of the B stars. Possible sources of systematic errors in these distance moduli are discu...
